1. A WORD FROM THE EDITOR:
In November, the "CERT BootCamp Ezine" will be replaced by "IT
Career Success", a brand-new bi-monthly ezine focussing on
skills, approaches and information to help you start or progress
your successful IT career. Not just certification information,
but a wealth of valuable articles and tips to help you make the
most of your career opportunities.
I hope you will stay with me during this transition, and let me
have your feeback, ideas and suggestions for future articles.
Thank you once again for all your support in the past.

2. CERTIFICATION MATERIALS: FREE RESOURCES
Some of the questions I get asked most frequently include, "What
books/study guides/practice questions should I use for exam
xyz?", or "Where can I get free resources for certification
abc?"
While a comprehensive list for every exam or cert would take up
a hefty volume, here are my top tips for good resources.
It never ceases to amaze me how much free information and
material is available on the internet. Why, only yesterday I
located a stunning free self-study course which is going to save
my team at least £3,000 in training fees over the next few
months.
If you are lucky enough to be working with the product/s that
you are studying, the ability to have free use of the software
will be your single most important free resource! Rather than
spending hours getting to know the product at random, first use
some of the other resources and create a list of the different
tasks you need to be familiar with etc. Then the time you spend
on the product will be much more focussed.
There are some excellent software packages you can buy in the
way of Certification Test Simulations, but you can also search
for free questions on the Internet, for example free samples
provided by test sellers. Certainly download the free samples
from www.transcender.com, which typically contain 15 questions.
Here are some other places to start looking:
http://www.ucertify.com - Free on-line tests.
http://www.measureup.com - demos that you can try free on-line.
http://www.4tests.com - free on-line exams.
It’s also always worth going to a good search engine and typing
in the exam number you are preparing for - sometimes you will
come up with some new and valuable resources that you won’t have
found another way.
Internet Discussion Forums
These forums are useful places where you can discuss topics with
your peers. Especially when selfstudying, it is beneficial to
have somewhere to go where you can post ideas and questions
about topics you are learning. Other Cert students and veterans
are often able and willing to help you with advice, tips and
even references for useful reading material. What ever you do,
don’t take what people say on face value you need to do your own
research, reading and practise to confirm and understand any
facts given to you in this way.
Here are some good forums to try out:

Microsoft Technet, KnowledgeBase & MSDN
These resources are available at our favorite price - free! Try
to use them during the quiet times if you can, as like many
popular Microsoft web sites, they can be slow during peak times.
You should use the Technet and KnowledgeBase when you have
specific questions or areas that you wish to research, rather
than wasting your time browsing around them aimlessly.
Finally, be sure to mention to anyone who will listen what you
are studying for. You will be surprised how helpful so many
people are and will often lend you books and other stuff free to
help you pass your exams!

JOKE – If General Motors had a Helpline…
HelpLine: General Motors HelpLine, how can I help you?
Customer: My car ran fine for a week and now it won't go
anywhere!
HelpLine: Is the gas tank empty?
Customer: Huh? How do I know?
HelpLine: There's a little gauge on the front panel with a
needle and markings from 'E' to 'F'. Where is the needle
pointing?
Customer: It's pointing to 'E'. What does that mean?
HelpLine: It means you have to visit a gasoline vendor and
purchase some more gasoline. You can install it yourself or pay
the vendor to install it for you.
Customer: What? I paid $12,000 for this car! Now you tell me
that I have to keep buying more components? I want a car that
comes with everything built in!
